Google has  announced yesterday the launch of Google Music. Google vice president of search Marissa Mayar said overnight the company has formed an alliance with LaLa.com and the MySpace-owned music service iLike . Other partners include Gracenote, iMeem, Pandora and Rhapsody. Google has also partnered with the major music labels: EMI, Sony Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Through Lala and iLike, Google will also be able to feature music from a large number of independent labels. This new service will be available only in the US for now and will be integrated in the default search results page.( RWW)

Google launched an interesting new service in China yesterday - a fully-licensed free-to-use ad-funded download platform offering some 350,000 tracks for free download from both Chinese and foreign artists, with the promise that that number will rise to over a million in the coming months. All four majors are on board. The service, though, is only available within China, and is unlikely to launch anywhere near here.

From BBC News: Google opens OneBox music service

OneBox is an alliance with music sites Lala and MySpace-owned iLike.

The US-only service allows people to search using song titles, artists or using snippets of lyrics and will also stream sought-after tracks.

Mark Mulligan, an analyst at research firm Forrester, said the service may offer a compelling alternative to illegal file-sharing.

"Apple can do little about iPod owners downloading from BitTorrent," he said in a blog post. "But Google on the other hand can."

BitTorrent software is widely used to trade music and movies.

"Just imagine if when a consumer searches for a song, alongside all of those Torrent results is a heavily integrated Google music offering."

When users search using OneBox a pop-up widget powered by iLike or Lala offers to play the entire song.

A MySpace box allows people to buy MP3s of the tracks and also highlights music videos and other information, such as upcoming concerts by the artists.

According to Google, the words "music" and "lyrics" are among the top 10 search terms of all time.

"At Google, we see millions of music-related queries every day," said the company's vice president of search Marissa Mayer at the launch in Los Angeles.

"It is clear to us that for our users music holds a very special and particular place."

Apple currently dominates the online music market with around 70% of worldwide sales.

In Europe, firms such as Spotify are also beginning to gain popularity. The free music-streaming service ,which launched in 2008, now has more than two million users in the UK, and more than six million across Europe.

The new Google collaboration will hope to emulate the success of these services.

Every day we get millions of search queries about music.  You want to know more about your favorite artists, find that new album or iconic song or figure out the name of that tune stuck in your head.  In fact, according to Insights for Search, two of the top 10 queries in the U.S. are music-related. Google Said In its blog.

"People searching for an artist, song or album will get what they are looking for right at the top of their search results, with links to audio previews and the option to purchase music from Google's music search partners MySpace and Lala," Google said.

"Lots of people search for music through Google, so it made sense for us to find a way to get them to the content they're looking for faster," said Tom Stocky, Google's director of product management.

Earlier today, Hitwise published a report estimating that music-related searches currently make up about 6% of total queries on Google. Clearly then, by integrating actual audio content that could be purchased online, Google would create a big opportunity for all of those involved.

Well, GoogleGoogleGoogle has just answered that call, by launching a major new feature that incorporates streaming audio previews when you search for an artist, album, or song using the search engine. Theres also music discovery baked in from services like PandoraPandoraPandora, RhapsodyRhapsodyRhapsody, and Imeemimeemimeem
